Michel Fonné (AOC Alsace)

Originally from Alsace, Michel Fonné has worked extensively throughout France and it’s various wine regions. He became a certified oenologist while studying in Dijon, and also obtained the technical expertise in Champenoise winemaking while working in Damery. He also had a brief stint in the US with winemaking, beginning in 1987 in the Alexander valley with Hafner Vineyards. After returning to France, Michel took over the family business from his uncle, René Barth, who ran the winery for forty years.

The estate is found in the commune of Bennwihr, which is approximately 2 hours south east of Nancy, very close to the France/Germany boarder. The village was completely destroyed during World War II, and was eventually rebuilt along the Alsace wine route at the foot of Marckrain (Grand Cru of the commune). The estate includes 12 hectares of vineyards with seven types of Alsacian vines including Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Muscat and Sylvaner.

2009 Gewurztraminer

Full-bodied and well-structured, probably the best-known Alsace variety. This wine develops a rich aroma of flowers, spices (gewurz = spicy), and exotic fruits. Powerful, seductive and slightly sweet, this wine is perfect as an aperitif and pairs extremely well with all types of Asian and Indian cuisine, as well as with strong cheeses and desserts.

2008 Pinot Blanc

Well-rounded yet delicate, combining freshness and softness, the Pinot Blanc represents the happy medium in the range of Alsace wines- not bone dry, yet not overly sweet. A wonderfully food friendly wine that pairs well with seafood pasta dishes, grilled light flesh fish, white meats, and light, delicate sauces.
